Area Attractions When you arrive you will notice that Elko is a community rich in history and laced with character. There are so many things to see and do. A good place to start is the Elko Area Chamber of Commerce located in the historic Sherman Station. This complex of ranch buildings was moved by the Chamber from a location 60 miles south of Elko. The complex includes the Sherman Station that was the stage stop at one time, the school house, creamery, blacksmith shop and barn. These buildings are over 100 years old and represent a great deal of the Elko area history. The Chamber also serves as a Visitor Center and we have all kinds of information on camping, hiking, fishing, places to see and events that happen almost weekly. Be sure and look at the Chamber Calendar for more details. Located inside the Sherman Station is our "Made in Elko" Gift Shop for those special gifts and remembrances. You could begin your visit indoors at our award-winning Northeastern Nevada museums and galleries or head outdoors to one of our many parks and recreation areas As evening falls you might want to try your luck at one of the local casinos, better known for their live entertainment and fine dining. We have theaters and quite often the Great Basin College presents a play or artist for your enjoyment. In the morning jump in the car and take a scenic tour around Elko County and take in nature's beauty with a quick trip of 35 minutes to the Ruby mountains, and travel up Lamoille Canyon. It is like traveling into the alpine mountains with mountain goats and sheep if you look close. On your way back down the canyon, be sure to stop in the quaint community of Lamoille nestled at the foot of those spectacular mountains. It is common to see deer in the Lamoille City Park early in the morning or as evening falls. The Elko area also is home to several modern gold mines, and you may want to visit one or all of the ghost towns that turn of the century mining left behind.Nevada, the "Silver State" is famous for the gold and silver mines that have long supported our growing economy. If you are looking for a slice of the real west you should consider staying at one of the area's working cowboy guest ranches where you can experience ranch living, taking a sunset horseback ride, work with the cows, or participate in wild west Cowboy Action Shooting.
